Portables, sometimes called modular classrooms or bungalows, are a common sight in San Diego County schools.

They can be a relatively cheap and quick way for districts to adapt to growing student populations or reduce class sizes. But there are questions about the quality of portables. Some have been in use for 20 or even 30 years are in need of extensive — and expensive — repairs.

inewsource surveyed school districts throughout the county and found how prevalent portables had become. One out of every five classrooms in San Diego County is a portable. At some districts, that number is much higher.
