In the latest edition of News In Numbers — finding stories in the numbers all around us — we report that four decades after California first began encouraging people to heat their shower water using the sun, many people still don’t realize the technology even exists.

The aggregate amount of installed solar power has skyrocketed.

But solar hot water has been left behind. There have been fewer than 500 solar hot water installations in San Diego County in the last 6 years, according to state records.
