Got an investigative story about San Diego? Want to join our group of contributors for community news? Let’s talk. 

inewsource works with freelance writers, photojournalists and graphic designers to produce investigative, accountability and community reporting focused on government and civic issues. Note: All freelance stories undergo our rigorous fact-checking process.

What we’re looking for:

We are interested in pitches that fit the type of reporting that inewsource focuses on: government and civic issues and topics such as immigration, corporate accountability, climate, health and education.

• Investigative story pitches: How do we define investigations? In the most simple terms: something new that someone doesn’t want the public to know. That could include investigating mismanagement, corruption and more. We’re looking for journalists who are experienced with producing investigations. Here are some examples of our work.
  • How affordable housing in National City became a cash machine for San Diego County labor unions
  • Veterans say renowned rehab program is now a minefield of drug abuse
  • Shattered glass and $600 in cash: The troubling case of William Stafford, sex offender
• Community reporting: Original, hyperlocal story pitches about communities across San Diego County. We’re particularly interested in hearing from freelancers who want to write about the communities they live in. We also prefer stories that are tied to government or civic issues, but are open to pitches for news features and other topics. Here are some examples of our community reporting:
  • Bonita residents say they want homes, not storage units
  • Chula Vista’s latest move could finally fill long-empty Albertsons building
  • San Diego got $8.5 million from a settlement for improving parks – but only in certain areas

Some of inewsource’s reporting is powered by notes and tips surfaced by our San Diego Documenters program. While we are mostly seeking freelance reporters to join our network of contributing journalists to take on assigned story angles, we’re open to engaging community story pitches, too.

What we’re not looking for:

• Personal essays. 
• Opinion and commentary pieces. 
• Product and consumer reviews. 
• Previously published reporting.
• Stories drafted by AI.

Internships

Internships are critical to developing the next generation of journalists and media professionals. We at inewsource are committed to offering paid reporting, production and business opportunities to students looking to hone their skills and develop new ones. We’ve done this since our founding in 2009 and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
