Work on future of Balboa Park begins

Botanical building at Balboa Park, Aug. 13, 2026 (Sandy Huffaker for inewsource)

One theme that came up in my recent reporting on Balboa Park was that this is a crucial time in the park’s history. A constrained city budget, maintenance and infrastructure repair backlog approaching $1 billion – the next few years will determine how the beloved park evolves in the coming decades.

A key part of that process gets underway tomorrow evening when the city’s Balboa Park Committee — one of several organizations with a say over the park — will hold a workshop on developing the park’s updated Master Plan.

The plan hasn’t been completely updated since 1989. This plan is due to be completed in 2028. When finished it will lay out a 30-year vision for the park, addressing finance and funding, governance, access, sustainability and other issues.

The meeting is at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Santa Fe Room of the Balboa Park Club, 2150 Pan American Road West.
