City Councilman Carl DeMaio has asked for an audit of the San Diego Police Department’s crime lab. In a letter to City Auditor Eduardo Luna and the City Council last night, DeMaio said it was imperative that the city quickly examine how the crime lab handles requests for DNA testing. He cited inewsource‘s recent report that showed the crime lab’s DNA backlog already contains about 445 cases—including homicides from 2006 and 2007—and is only getting worse.
DeMaio asked the auditor to examine the crime lab’s performance and the potential for consolidating it with the San Diego Sheriff’s crime lab, among other things. He asked the auditor to give this review high priority in the next fiscal year.
