A note from our deputy managing editor.

With support from Report for America, inewsource will hire a reporter to cover public education in San Diego with a laser focus on serving Latino families.

This position expands our existing partnership with Report for America, a national service program that places journalists in newsrooms across the country to report on topics and communities that receive too little coverage.

Reporter Camille von Kaenel has been with us since mid-2020, investigating development issues in San Diego’s unincorporated areas thanks to the generosity of Report For America and our supporters.

Starting in June, we’ll continue hosting von Kaenel and welcome a new Report For America reporter to our growing newsroom.

The program funds up to half a reporter’s salary and offers extensive training opportunities for its journalists. Applications are now open for the highly competitive program, which fielded more than 1,800 applications last year.

We are seeking a reporter fluent in both Spanish and English who will cover San Diego schools with an eye for spotting stories that can hold the powerful to account and lead to positive impacts for students, parents and educators.

The idea for this position grew out of what we see as a great need: San Diego is home to San Diego Unified, the second largest school district in the state, yet many news organizations have seen their staff for covering education dwindle over the years as newsrooms have faced budget cuts.

The position also speaks to the culture at inewsource, which I’m proud to say is committed to making our newsroom and journalism more inclusive.

In an effort to reach more Spanish-speaking readers, we’ve started translating some of our investigative stories for readers and will continue that practice with this new position.

One of 270 Report For America host newsrooms and the only one in San Diego, inewsource wasn’t alone in our thinking about what areas of coverage need more attention.

Of the 325 positions this cycle, 40 of the new beats will focus on education, and newsrooms are seeking more than two dozen Spanish-speaking reporters.

We’re excited to continue our partnership with Report For America, thankful for the amazing support they provide emerging journalists and look forward to serving San Diego with this new beat.
