inewsource’s Board of Directors elected three new members this month, further expanding the expertise and experience of our board. Sarah Bakhiet, Stephanie Bergsma and Karen Liu will start three-year terms on July 1.
“We are thrilled to welcome back Stephanie Bergsma to the board,” inewsource Board Chair Sandra Timmons said. “Her extensive experience with public broadcasting makes her a valuable leader for inewsource. Sarah Bakheit and Karen Liu’s respect for in-depth reporting based on data and their experience in education and biotechnology, respectively, adds content expertise to the board. We are very pleased at their support of inewsource. ”
Sarah Bakhiet taught history, government and constitutional law at Berkshire School (her alma mater) and then at La Jolla Country Day School.
She also served as assistant head of school at La Jolla Country Day School for eight years. Bakhiet recently retired as the head of school at Seabury Hall, the premier college prep school on Maui, Hawaii.
Stephanie Bergsma is a former associate general manager at KPBS, where she was instrumental in developing the public radio and TV station’s partnership with inewsource. During her 30 years at KPBS, Bergsma was responsible for creating the Producers Club and major gifts and underwriting programs. Bergsma also served on the inewsource Board of Directors 2014-2022.
Karen Liu is the vice president of quality assurance and regulatory affairs at Carlsmed, Inc. Her deep industry experience includes leadership roles at NuVasive, Medtronic and several San Diego start-ups. Her career path has been driven by improving patient outcomes with safe and innovative medical devices. Liu is a news junkie who is passionate about data-driven reporting.
