It may cost nearly $7 million more for a new bikeway project in Mission Valley and the Uptown area, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.
SANDAG board members are set to consider on Friday whether to increase the budget for the 3.3-mile plan spanning from Washington Street to San Diego Avenue, Hotel Circle South, Camino de la Reina and Third Avenue in the city of San Diego. The project, which would connect lanes to other existing bikeways, is now expected to cost more than $15 million.
Staff said bids from contractors came in at least 20% more than the agency estimated due to increased costs for materials such as concrete. The agency also said inflation, labor shortages and increased demand continue to drive up construction costs.
The additional costs would be covered by SANDAG’s TransNet funds and about $359,000 from the city.
The project would take more than a year to complete and would begin during the 2025 fiscal year.
