San Diego State University is opening a research institute focused on the sports betting industry.
The Institute on Sports Wagering and Gaming will be part of the university’s Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. A similar research institute is housed at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Brandon Mastromartino, an assistant professor at San Diego State, will lead the institute. Mastromartino said in a statement that the new effort aims “to provide timely, evidence based insights that inform industry best practices, responsible gaming strategies, and public policy conversations — all while creating new educational pathways for students and professionals.”
A university announcement said the institute will offer certificate and executive education programs and aims to work with stakeholders in the sports betting industry, including tribes and sports leagues.
