City leaders are looking at ways the Elite Athlete Training Center in east Chula Vista can bring in more revenue, upgrade facilities, offer additional programs and connect more with the public, Documenter Jennifer Hua reports from a recent meeting she attended.
The Chula Vista City Council approved funding in April to create a long-term vision for the 155-acre site. Originally opened in 1995, the center is primarily used as a training campus for Olympic, Paralympic and other elite athletes, though it also offers community programs.
But the center’s revenues from 2022-2025 declined by 18%, a roughly $1.7 million difference, consultant Elizabeth Dixon said. Though revenue since then is on a positive incline again, she said, ways to raise revenue was one of the major discussion points city councilmembers brought up.
A few focuses include exploring ways to incorporate additional sports and sports science avenues, expand through events, partnerships and increase public access. The master plan project will include a strategy to implement changes over the next 20-30 years.

Another City Council workshop for the master plan will be held in early 2027. It will be open to the public.
