Cindy Lopez widened her lead over Luz Molina for National City’s District 1 City Council race in the latest election results released Friday evening — by 10 more votes. She’s now up 13 with 1,765 counted.
Lopez is a National School District board member. Molina is an incumbent councilmember.
“I’m a very calm person, so I’m not really worried,” Lopez told inewsource in a phone call Friday evening. “I’m very confident that the voters will decide and things will come at the end how it needs to be.”
Lopez said the vote margin is so close because she and Molina had similar messaging.
In an interview Tuesday night, Molina said she wants to wait until all the votes are counted before declaring a victory or conceding.
With over 886,000 ballots counted, San Diego County election officials estimate they still have 390,000 left to count.
The next batch of votes counted are scheduled to be posted by Monday night, according to election officials.
