When we went out to shoot a video about “daylighting” and the most-ticketed unmarked curbs in San Diego we ran into a problem — they were all now marked to be painted red!
San Diego’s “daylighting” policy took effect in March 2025, making it illegal to park within 20 feet of a crosswalk. The idea was to make it safer for pedestrians. The law didn’t require curbs to be marked, but many curbs were painted red to let drivers know about the change.
After analyzing data to determine the most ticketed curbs in the city and visiting some of them myself, I found that the curbs at 3400 Madison Ave. and 2900 Gunn St. weren’t adequately marked for daylighting, despite being a major source of citations. The Gunn Street location was totally unmarked and the Madison Avenue spot was marked red but not far enough. That means that parking behind the red curb could still get you a ticket.
When we reached out to Council member Stephen Whitburn, he said that he supported painting the curbs as soon as possible. After publishing the article, they are now marked to be painted. Results!
