Money for Mission Bay bathrooms, but not these

There was a big sigh of relief, in more ways than one, when Mayor Todd Gloria and two councilmembers announced recently that 13 closed bathrooms at Mission Bay Park would reopen.

The closures were the cuts in the Parks and Rec budget that drew the most ire. Here are some others that haven’t gotten as much attention. Budget savings in parentheses:

  • Pools. The city will close pools for 13 weeks this year, nine weeks more than the usual four week closure. They’ll start in September and end in June, and be staggered across the city. ($957,846)
  • More bathrooms. Fiesta Island had 14 porta potties. The city took away half of them. ($17,600)
  • Beaches. They’ll be dirtier. The city cut six positions from the beach maintenance team. ($722,609)
