Hello readers.
Last Sunday, we dropped our investigation into the circumstances around Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport being the nation’s largest general aviation airport lead polluter.
The legwork to connect our reporting with as many residents as possible, especially parents living in the surrounding areas, has begun.
On Wednesday, I was on an online panel with pediatricians who have been involved in pushing for more public health intervention in the area. San Diego Pediatricians for Clean Air organized the webinar as a part of the 2026 National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.
Then, I printed out flyers with a QR code to the investigation and started going school to school in the area to get the word out. The experience has been uplifting at times, and also clearly necessary — most folks I spoke with had no idea about the problem.
However, I was elated when I walked up to some high school employees who told me their principal had read our piece and was sharing it among them.
Friday, I spoke with Andrew Bracken on KPBS Roundtable, where I also mentioned that we are reaching out to elected officials representing our region to learn what they are willing to do to address the issue. Stay tuned for that reporting. It’s coming up.
Here is a little video from the field. More to come.
