Live in East County or the South Bay? You may be able to get free home upgrades through a state-funded decarbonization program, Documenter Armando Flores reports.
The Equitable Building Decarbonization program, or EBD, is meant to boost energy efficiency and improve indoor air quality for local underserved communities. Low- and moderate-income households are eligible.
Residents who rent or own a single-family, multifamily or mobile home constructed before January 2020 and use natural gas, propane or another fossil fuel as the primary heating source are eligible.
The no-cost upgrades include appliances and installation for home weatherization and air sealing, heat pump water heaters, heat pump heating and cooling systems, electric laundry appliances, induction cooktops, lighting and low-flow shower heads.
Residents who qualify are paired with a program advisor to assess which upgrades work for their home and to schedule contracting work.
To enroll or find more resources, home owners can apply at the EBD program website or call 424-285-6602. Tenants should contact their landlord or property owner to enroll on their behalf.
