Our Documenter Amanda Herningle recently attended the port’s San Diego Harbor Safety Committee meeting, where members were briefed on a new radar-monitoring project underway that is meant to improve vessel tracking during inclement weather.
Radar technology has been installed that covers the entrance of the bay to the cruise ship terminal.
Dave Foster, the port’s homeland security director, said officials are still in the first phase of fine-tuning the radar.
The new technology may help prevent maritime issues like excessive speed that can cause damaging wakes in Tuna Harbor, or close-call incidents, such as a recent one involving a sailboat and a Disney cruise ship near the cruise ship terminal.
