inewsource wins top SD Press Club awards

Delivering high-quality, high-impact journalism for our fellow San Diegans — that’s the goal for our team everyday, and we’re honored that our work was recognized last night at the San Diego Press Club awards!

inewsource took home three of the biggest honors and an additional six first-place awards in the annual contest that recognizes some of the finest journalism and public relations work across San Diego County.

The awards recognized some of our best recent reporting:

  • Our investigation from reporters Cody Dulaney and Greg Moran, who found that a powerful coalition of labor unions owns a National City affordable housing complex and uses it as a cash machine to fund campaign activity, won Best of Show among online and daily newspapers. In its separate first-place win for investigative reporting, judges said the project was “a prime example of how relentless reporting and following the money can turn up gemstones.”
  • We also received the overall Body of Work award for our community-centered investigative reporting. In addition to our labor reporting, the award recognized HOME SICK, our monthslong project led by Philip Salata about the human toll of the Tijuana River sewage crisis; our deep behind-the-scenes look into the conditions at the Otay Mesa Detention Center from Sofía Mejías-Pascoe and Jake Kincaid; our investigation into a massive data center proposal in Imperial County from Philip and Greg; and our government website audit from Katie Futterman conducted in partnership with our San Diego Documenters program.
  • Philip and Senior Audience Engagement Producer Iran “JR” Martinez won Best of Show in video photography for their piece on ranch life in the Tijuana River Valley.

We also earned first place for our social media reporting on Instagram.

The full list of winners can be found here.

I hope the recent Press Club awards give you a chance to catch up on our reporting, some of the finest journalism in the region. Our work took months to complete — and a team of reporters, editors, photographers, audience specialists, Documenters and more to bring it to life.
