The San Ysidro Public Library is closed due to flooding, affecting thousands of monthly visitors in the area.
City spokesperson Caleb Olsen said the library first closed down on Aug. 7 due to a “malfunctioning unit in the men’s restroom.”
“The flooding originated in the restroom, then spread into the lobby, the main entrance and community room,” he said in an email.
The flooding caused damages, so Olsen said the city has been repairing the library. These repairs include drying, removing, replacing and repainting affected areas such as the drywall and interior insulation.
He said “repairs are going smoothly” as the city expects to reopen the library in mid-September. He said it’s unclear how much these repairs are costing the city right now.
An average of about 7,000 people use this library every month, he said. The library is fairly new — it opened in 2019 — and this is the first time it’s had a flooding issue.
Any holds will be moved to the Otay Mesa-Nestor Library, and programs have been canceled until further notice, according to the city’s website.
