For San Diego County’s refugees, who were already less likely to be able to afford basic needs, the pandemic’s economic impact has been broad and risks being long lasting.

Roxana Popescu is an investigative reporter at inewsource. She has a B.A. from Yale University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University, where she wrote her dissertation about the balcony as a motif in poetry, prose and painting. She teaches writing at the University of San Diego.
Before moving back to San Diego in 2008, she spent time in New England, Paris and Italy, with a few summers in South Texas and winter trips to Montreal (got the memo flipped on when to visit those last two). She speaks French, Spanish, Italian and Romanian and loves using these languages in her work. She plans to retire in Italy in 2060.
