inewsource was honored with 22 awards Tuesday night from the San Diego Press Club, including a Best of Show award.
Reporter Roxana Popescu, who has worked with inewsource since 2010, took home the Best of Show in the Online and Daily Newspapers category for her story, “Pandemic takes a toll on San Diego County refugees sheltering in place with abusive partners.”
The judges called it a “sensitive and important story” that shed light on the struggles of women and children amid the pandemic. Popescu’s story was chosen from all the first place entries in that category, with the story also winning first place for feature stories on serious subjects.
inewsource reporters also swept the category for investigative reporting, taking first, second and third place honors.
The annual competition, which yielded about 1,000 entries, was judged by the New Orleans Press Club chapter and covered from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this is the first year the competition’s yearly gala has been hosted online.
