Why this matters

Email and audio are convenient ways for many readers to access our local news investigations.

Hi, readers!

As inewsource’s Product Manager and Content Producer, we spend a lot of time thinking about how we can distribute our local reporting in ways that are as convenient as possible for you.

Earlier this year, we refreshed our website design, navigation and coverage areas to simplify pathways for you to identify stories you want to read. Plus, we added features like our Contextualizer tool to offer further insight on jargony words, a hub to answer your questions with just a few taps, and Beeline reader to enhance the readability of the text on your screen. (If you haven’t given Beeline Reader a try, we highly recommend it! Turn it on by tapping the blue Beeline Reader icon at the top of our stories, and click that same icon to turn it off at any time.)

We’re so excited to share the latest updates our team has been working on: newsletters and audio narrations.

You can subscribe to our new slate of newsletters based on your interests and how often you want to hear from us. Depending on your choices, the newsletters highlight interesting facts from longform investigations and show you what stories other readers are enjoying. They’ll connect our reporting to broader themes, offer a behind-the-scenes look into our cartoonist’s artistic process and provide updates on a community program aimed at protecting local democracy.

If you already subscribe to Latest News and/or The Weekender, you won’t need to make any changes. You’ll see the updated editions in your inbox over the next couple weeks.

To receive our new newsletters, however, you’ll need to opt-in via our newsletter sign-up page or through the sign-up box below.

We know your time and inbox space is valuable. Our hope is that you’ll choose the newsletter(s) that best match your interests and habits.

If you want more information before you subscribe keep scrolling for an overview of what you can expect.

Editorial newsletters

The Weekender

We’ve crafted a lighter newsletter to get your weekend started with an interesting fact you might’ve overlooked from the prior week’s investigations and a caption contest run by our new cartoonist, Steve Breen.

You’ll now receive The Weekender, with a new look and feel, on Fridays.

Drawing Conclusions

We recently hired renowned San Diego cartoonist Steve Breen to create standalone cartoons and illustrations for our investigations. His work offers insightful visual commentary on local and national news events, and his newsletter will offer a window into his creative process.

Signing up will get you an email on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays — an alert each time we publish a new cartoon. Plus, you’ll receive a biweekly email on Tuesdays that includes some of Steve’s favorite cartoons from the previous two weeks in addition to behind-the-scenes sketches and commentary.

Documenters Dispatch

We’re launching a program that will train and pay community members to observe and take notes on public meetings. It’s part of a national effort to keep democracy strong by filling the gaps left as local news media shrinks.

This weekly newsletter written by Program Manager Joshua Piedra will provide updates on what the San Diego Documenters are up to and how you can get involved.

Listen to this

In addition to our new newsletters, we’re also piloting a new way to engage with our stories. Starting this week, you’ll begin to notice an audio player living at the top of new posts, including this blog.

Thanks to our partners at Everlit, we’re now able to create high-quality AI narrations of stories you may prefer to listen to rather than read yourself. While some pronunciation errors are expected, this is the most advanced text-to-speech offering we’ve tested to date.

Story narration is our second AI-related product on our site. As with Contextualizer, we’re taking factual accuracy seriously. If you spot an error beyond a minor mispronunciation, let us know by using the form at the hub in the bottom-right corner of your screen.

Stay tuned for more from our work with Everlit in the months ahead!
